For my final shading project for a class I had to take an image of a still life, take an object out of the scene, create that object in cgi, and composite the object back into the scene. I choose to use a old suitcase that belonged to my grandmother as the object I would create.
The suitcase had a wide variety of materials that I had to create. I used a combination of procedural and painted textures to create this. The texture of the suitcase and the base metal was created procedurally and the minute detail was painted.
Unlike the procedural apple project, the base geometry I created was fairly complex. I did add slight variations to the geometry with the shader, but nothing drastic.
